Preparing artichoke hearts

The globe artichoke is related to the thistle. Its leaves are edible, as is the bottom part of the flower, called the 'heart' or 'fond' (which you can also buy tinned or frozen).
-Holding the artichoke by the stem, saw the body of the artichoke in half horizontally. Discard the purple leaves at the tip.
-Break the stem at the base of the artichoke by pushing it away from you. Pull the stem from the artichoke and remove the fibres.
-Snap the leaves from around the cut edges of the artichoke. Cut the remaining leaves from the artichoke.
-Holding the artichoke in the palm of your hands and, angling the knife, peel away the skin to leave only the white 'fond'. Slice off the tip of the artichoke.
-Scrape the hairy choke from the centre of the artichoke using a spoon.

Third Conditional: no possibility

Third Conditional: no possibility

The first conditional and second conditionals talk about the future. With the third conditional we talk about the past. We talk about a condition in the past that did not happen. That is why there is no possibility for this condition. The third conditional is also like a dream, but with no possibility of the dream coming true.
Last week you bought a lottery ticket. But you did not win. :-(

IfI had won the lotteryI would have bought a car.
Notice that we are thinking about an impossible past condition. You did not win the lottery. So the condition was not true, and that particular condition can never be true because it is finished. We use the past perfect tense to talk about the impossible past condition. We use WOULD HAVE + past participle to talk about the impossible past result. The important thing about the third conditional is that both the condition and result are impossible now.
Sometimes, we use should havecould havemight have instead of would have, for example: If you had bought a lottery ticket, you might have won.

15.1 '-ing' or '-ed'?

Complete the film review.
Slow Lightning, the new movie featuring up-and-coming Hollywood star Jake Vanguard, looks like an combination of action thrills and romantic comedy, directed by Jeff Katzenberger. Of course, as an avid fan of Vanguard's, I was extremely  to see what he could achieve in collaboration with Katzenberger. The results, though, are very . As you would expect, the cinematography and effects are brilliant, but the story is poorly scripted, and most audiences will be by Vanguard's unintelligent, formulaic acting. The action centres on the theft of a nuclear device from a US Army base, but the subplot involving the kidnapping of a bus driver and his grandmother will leave most viewers . At 200 minutes, the movie is simply too long, and by the end I was with the whole thing. It was to see how far the legendary Katzenberger has fallen since his great movies of the 90s.
